I am just finishing up chapter 4 of "Super Derek" [SDU] and some writers say I have a clear mind for writing it. So I replied I might be able to teach it and what better way than to write it on DogBlots. Here are just 3 steps to getting into character,
- I wrote this before: a writer is an interpreter of complex situations, even epic plotlines, a masterful weave of subplots. When you write, realize that you have created a story -even a voice (a narrator or pov) but it has no life. Your job is to be that spark that gets the engine pumping. And being a spark is as simple as doing the thing warranted again and again until the chord changes, the fingers shift and it repeats again and again,
- The next most important thing I noticed writers ask me is: how to write good dialogue or descriptions. The answer is simply to become an actor in your own story. Try it out from different perspectives and if it sounds weird or unnatural to rewrite it, sometimes as a version of a stereotype / trope / what have you. Something contextually fresh would be nice to see.
- Finally, the least important thing: always write when you can imagine you are alone. You may not be, but if you could imagine that nobody is following your thoughts, or peering at you thru your window. The secret is to possibly build up a lot of passive followers (old trick) and push out the insistent nosy ones. Sometimes, just do something else for a while. I code when I can't write and vice versa.
Now I have 1.5k words left to write in SDU tonight. And these are important words. It's already past 11pm.
